SITE AND CIVIL ENGINEERING

Services

North Woods Engineering’s site and civil engineering services include the design and analysis of the infrastructure and utilities that make our Adirondack communities thrive.  Our site development and design philosophy is rooted in a respect for the environment while balancing the needs and goals of our clients.  Our staff takes pride in providing sound technical solutions, that are well communicated, and meet the needs of our clients.

Our office is located 5 miles from the Adirondack Park Agency’s and the Department of Environmental Conservation Region 5 headquarters in Ray Brook.  We are well versed in the seemingly complex rules, regulations and permitting process that the DEC and APA requires.  We routinely work on projects that require permits from these state agencies and have a solid working relationship with many of permit administrators and review staff.

Young Life Septic System

This multi-phase improvement project is for upgrades to different portions of a children’s camp sewer system in the Town of Santa Clara, NY, permitted at 30,000 gallons a day.

For the initial improvements, North Wood Engineering provided consulting services, which included a comprehensive review of the treatment system, review of water usage for the facility, different alternatives for treatment improvements, generation of a complete engineering report, plan and detail preparation, and permitting.  This initial project culminated in the construction of two lined wastewater lagoons, with vegetated floating island wetland systems to reduce nitrates and phosphorus in the effluent.

This improved design was approved by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

In addition to this improvement, design and permitting were accomplished for a section of force main replacement, and we are currently designing a replacement main pump station.

Village of Saranac Lake Streets Reconstruction

North Woods Engineering was retained by the Village of Saranac Lake to complete the design of comprehensive improvements for five prominent village streets.

The project scope includes a combination of water, sewer, storm drainage, curb, sidewalk, and roadway subbases/asphalt pavement design.  A new wastewater pump station is also included for the DPW garage on Van Buren Street. The streets throughout the Village of Saranac Lake involved in the project interact with state highways, other public roadways, and multiple educational institutes.

ORDA/USA Bobsled Push Track

North Woods Engineering worked closely with the USOC and USA Bobsled to develop a new bobsled push track at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York.  This track is used by USA Bobsled to practice starts in modified bobsleds in the off-ice season.

Services included demolition plan, site and grading plan, details, and specifications, for all portions of the development.  Drainage design was also performed, to ensure that ice formation would not develop on the track surface.  Based upon grade information provided by USOC, a track profile with appropriate vertical curves to provide smooth transitions between grade changes was developed.

In addition, bidding and minor construction administration services were provided, on an as-requested basis.

Harrietstown Town Hall - Seawall Replacement

The project involved the replacement of a deteriorated and damaged retaining wall along the Saranac River behind theTown of Harrietstown’s historic Town Hall in Saranac Lake.

North Woods Engineering was the lead consultant for the project.  Work included coordination with a surveyor, preparation of contract plans and technical and general specifications; significant permitting, bidding oversight; and construction observation and administration.

Design work included a pre-cast concrete wall system, erosion and sediment control, relocation of an emergency generator, and accessibility improvements.

Significant hydraulic modeling of the river was completed to demonstrate that the new wall would raise the floodwaters of the regulated floodway.  Work also required a variance from the Adirondack Park Agency.
